A few years ago I found myself wandering through the Portland Farmers’ Market in the height of summer. "Free Range" are the best words I can use to describe the immersion of organic culture and food that have since become the picture in my mind of true Portland. It was at this time that I was experimenting with the use of felted roving as yarn. I loved all my experiments because they defied my expectations of traditional yarn and surprised me with new project ideas that could not be accomplished with spun yarn. I started thinking of them as "Free Range" skeins, and soon after gave them their official name. Now, after many revisions, The Portlands are known as satisfyingly super bulky singles with enough softness and integrity to knit, crochet or even weave. Warning: The Portlands are expressly intended for fiber artists comfortable with wandering outside the box.
